ALAS SHRI BALRAJ SINGH SHERGILL IS NO MORE

Obituaries are always difficult to write. It is with heavy heart that I am writing about the sad demise of Sardar Balraj Singh Shergill, Founder of Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 71, S,A,S, Nagar, Mohali, in the wee hours of the 1st August, 2011, after a prolonged illness. The cremation took place the same day. The Bhog and Antim Ardas for the peace of the Departed Soul was held on 6th August, 2011 (Saturday) at Gurdwara Sri Angeetha Sahib, Near Bus Stand, Phase 8, Mohali. It could be judged from the huge gathering of people from all walks of life as to how dear he was amongst one and all. In fact – as a number of eminent persons averred, while paying rich tributes to Sardar Balraj Singh Shergill – he was like a magnet which would attract people towards him; he had an aura which was noble and kind.
He started Paragon Educational Society, S.A.S. Nagar, Mohali in the year 1981 as he was of the firm opinion that discipline and hard work are stepping stones to a bright future. It was his firm belief that good work-culture brings harmony in the education and atmosphere. It was with this aim in view, that he started Paragon School which is now a great institute in the entire northern region to reckon with.
On the 21st Annual Day Function of the school, His excellency Lt. Gen. J.F.R. Jacob, PVSM (Retd.). Governor of Punjab remarked that he was happy to see that the school was making a significant contribution in imparting quality curricular education activities like games, music, dance & drama for the all-round development of the students studying in the school. He was glad that the school was placing importance on Computer Education.
Besides this, Sardar Balraj Singh Shergill who remained General Secretary of ICFA for about two decades, formed Friends of China Association for furthering ties of friendship and mutual co-operation between people of China and India. He was the President of the Association. He was a strong votary of friendly relations between the two countries. He was felicitated by the Prime Minister of China Wen Jiabao. The ceremony took place at Delhi on December 15, 2010, during Jiabao’s visit to India. He had visited China ten times and various educational and cultural delegations had participated in his organization as well.
He had a multifaceted personality. Despite his heavy schedule, he would find time to do “riaz” on harmonium, and also pen down his thoughts in poetic creations.
Not only his immediate family members, his students, associates, but whosoever came into his contact will miss the great charm he possessed.
